Discover the new Chamber of Wonder
at Swarovski Kristallwelten

The impressive new Chamber of Wonder 'Crystallizing Identity' by Chiharu Shiota is inspired by an ancient Japanese legend, which says that people that are destined to meet are connected by an invisible red thread, naturally attached to their fingers. No matter which path they take in life, their threads will inevitably converge at some point in their lives until they meet. A myth that resonates in many cultures.

What can the visitor expect from your Chamber of Wonder?

I’m interested in the tension of human life—we live in separate bodies, but we share the same thoughts and feelings. I want people to feel both lost and found, as they explore the space, reflecting on this connection. But in the end, I want them feel free to experience space in any way. There is no single answer, everyone will have a different experience.

What was the process like, how did the concept of this Chamber of Wonder come together?

I first need to visit the exhibition space to see what’s possible there. Only then can I decide what will work in that space. When I saw the green giant at Swarovski—a head merging into the landscape with a belly full of artistic worlds—it inspired me to create something around the mystery of life.

I made some sketches of what I wanted the installation to look like, but the process is always changing. Since I install the artwork at the location, it never looks exactly like my sketches. When I create, I put all my energy into the piece, letting it develop as I work.
