Many times, we think of the sound of crystal as the clanking or collision of crystal. It is often imagined as something very solid and sometimes brittle, a resonance that lingers with a certain fragility. In the Chamber of Wonder 'Kristallstimmen' by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer the sound of crystal becomes an experience.
‘Kristallstimmen’ (Crystal Voices), is a sonic portrait that celebrates the untold stories and hidden voices of Swarovski. An interactive soundscape made with three thousand suspended loudspeakers, each of which plays back a different voice recording from one Swarovski employee.
In this symphony of light and sound, the sound of crystal is the echo of personal stories. Recorded by Swarovski employees all over the world in the Summer of 2024, who answered one of the artist’s questions like:
The result you can hear is an echo of more than 50 unique languages expressing the joy, enthusiasm and pride of Swarovski employees and their unique savoir-faire. Listen closely.
‘Kristallstimmen’ is within the tradition of immersive sound as explored in surround-sound, deep listening, acoustic arrays, ambisonics and other research fields. This installation is part of the series of pieces investigating the perception of thousands of simultaneous sounds each playing in a different dedicated loudspeaker, —what Rafael Lozano-Hemmer calls 'speaker as pixel'. A pixel is a point of light varying in intensity and spectral frequency: coordinated with its neighbours, the perception of pixels gives rise to images.
