Derek McLane è uno scenografo vincitore di Emmy e Tony Awards che lavora principalmente per i teatri di Broadway e per la televisione. Fino ad oggi ha già progettato quasi 350 allestimenti, tra cui le premiate produzioni di Broadway Moulin Rouge! (vincitore ai Tony Awards), A Soldier’s Play (nominato ai Tony Awards), American Son, Parisian Woman, The Price, Beautiful, Fully Committed, Noises Off, Gigi, 33 Variations (con Jane Fonda, vincitore ai Tony Awards), China Doll (con Al Pacino), How to Succeed in Business Without Even Trying (con Daniel Radcliffe), Follies, Anything Goes, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (con Robin Williams), Ragtime, The Pajama Game, I Am My Own Wife. Per teatri Off-Broadway ha allestito Buried Child, Jerry Springer The Opera, Merrily We Roll Along, The Spoils, If I Forget, Love, Love, Love, The Night of the Iguana, Sweet Charity, Into the Woods, Ruined, The Last Five Years.

Ha lavorato per la televisione allestendo per sei anni consecutivi le scenografie dei Premi Oscar, mentre per NBC ha firmato le scenografie dei musical The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, The Wiz & Hairspray. Derek è il presidente del The New Group Theatre. Tra i numerosi premi che ha vinto ricordiamo 2 Tony Awards, 2 Emmy Awards, 2 Obie Awards, 2 Drama Desks, 3 Lucille Lortel Awards e 3 Art Directors Guild Awards.
