From September 22 to 30, 2018, the UCI Road World Championships will take place in Innsbruck-Tirol. Annemiek van Vleuten, reigning world time trial champion, is one of the top favorites to win the UCI Road World Championship. She recently visited Swarovski Crystal Worlds for scouting the course and gave us a short interview.
How did you like the course? Is it something that suits you? I am really excited, because it is so hard and hilly. Since the Olympics in Rio I found myself a little bit more as a climber. Actually I was almost a little bit disappointed that we are not going up the steep hill the man do in the final. That could suit me even better. But it is still a really hard race. There’s a very nice climb in the final and we do it three times. It is exiting to have such a world championship organized on a hilly course. It suits me, so I like it.
What are your expectations for September? I do not really have expectations, I only know that the course really suits me. Then I focus to be in my top shape. It is hard to have expectations beforehand. My goal is to be optimally prepared. To see that the course suits me makes me even more excited and more motivated to give everything and to prepare perfectly.
Have you ever visited Tyrol before? Actually, this is my first time here. Yesterday I arrived here by airplane and was amazed how beautiful it is. We will have beautiful world championships here.
How come that you became an expert in climbing when growing up in the Netherlands? How did you train that? It is not necessary to be in the mountains to be a good climber. You can also prepare very well in the Netherlands with the wind. You can produce a lot of power riding against the wind. That’s also what you need: uphill power. And then a low bodyweight, watch your diet and train very hard – that’s also possible in the Netherlands. But I’d really love to live in the mountains and I love to go to training camps in the mountains.
How do you prepare for the world championship? I responded very well to high altitude trainings. So I will prepare myself with sitting and training and sleeping on the mountains for three weeks. With less oxygen exposure it’s harder for your body to work. Then when I come down, I am usually in really good shape.
Thank you for the interview!
