Music in the Giant 2017

ANNUAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Year after year, “Music in the Giant” brings together internationally noted soloists and top-class ensembles from the realm of classical music to Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds) in Wattens. Under the artistic direction of Thomas Larcher, the finest musical quality and diversity are provided in a small, intimate space; world stars in an intimate atmosphere and encounters with traditional favorites and astonishingly new compositions.

The great diversity of string quartets and Franz Schubert’s music define the program at the “Music in the Giant” festival, which will be held from May 19 to 27, 2017 at Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds) and the Business Building Brandtgut in Wattens, as well as the indoor riding arena at the Schindlhof in Fritzens.

Music in the Giant - Chamber Music Festival

The fourteenth edition of the festival, which will be held fromMay 19 to 27, 2017 will feature the Minetti Quartet, Quatuor Diotima, the Jerusalem Quartet with clarinetist Sharon Kam, the Belcea Quartet, and the Kitgut Quartet. The famous English Chamber Orchestra, appearing with cellist Nicolas Altstaedt, and the Scharoun Ensemble from Berlin will perform an expanded chamber music program. Another festival highlight is a concert for the 50-year anniversary of the Wattens School of Music.

MUSIC ON FOUR BY FOUR STRINGS

The connections between the classical or romantic repertoire and the compositions from the 20th and 21st century are revealed by four of this art form’s leading ensembles: the Minetti Quartet, one of the outstanding young Austrian quartets, the French Quatuor Diotima, the Israeli Jerusalem Quartet, performing with clarinetist Sharon Kam, and the British Belcea Quartet. All of these were founded in the mid-1990s and have perfected their playing (together) along with their unmistakable sound over the years.

This tonal diversity on four by four strings becomes especially apparent in the works of Franz Schubert, on whom “Music in the Giant” is focusing as one of the highlights in 2017.

FROM SCHUBERT TO THE 21st CENTURY

Compositions from all his creative phases – from the Quartet in D major completed by the 16-year-old in 1813 up to the last work for this arrangement, the String Quartet in G major D 887 from 1826 – will be performed alongside late quartets by Béla Bartók and compositions from the 21st century. In addition to a work by the British composer Brian Elias, the 3rd and 4th String Quartet by the artistic director Thomas Larcher, as well as a new work by the young German composer Gregor A. Mayrhofer will represent the contemporary creations.

Introductory DISCUSSIONS

As in the past few years, one hour before a certain selection of concerts, an introductory discussion was held – both in German and in English. In an open exchange with international arts and culture journalists, as well as other professionals from the field of music, the artists at the festival offer an in-depth look into their works and the programs they have assembled for “Music in the Giant”.
