“It’s a bit like an enigmatic detective story.”

Jim Whiting

The freelance artist Jim Whiting was born on 11.01.1951 in Paris. At the age of five he made his first mobile mechanical construction. For more than 25 years he has been professionally involved with mobile installations. He achieved his international breakthrough in 1994 when he portrayed articles of clothing moving around bizarrely in the Herbie Hancock video “Rock it”. The video won a Grammy and ten MTV Awards, plus many others. From 1988 to 1992 Whiting provoked bewilderment and enthusiasm throughout Europe with his machine theatre “Unnatural Bodies”. With his subsequent project “Bimbo Town” Whiting moved in 1997 to Leipzig, where he still lives today. For the Swarovski Crystal Worlds, in the autumn of 2007 Jim Whiting created the Mechanical Theatre. An installation of bewildering, crazy and unpredictable machines which hop, stamp and fly in three dimensions.
