Michael Kienzer was born in Steyr, Austria in 1962. He lives and works in Vienna.
Michael Kienzer has played a major role in Austrian contemporary art since the end of the eighties. A recurring theme in his work is the relationship between the object and the material. Expanding on the concept of sculpture, he focuses on space, time, and surface area, as well as on the density and three-dimensionality of linear forms. Another characteristic feature of his work is the use of techniques such as wrapping, tying up, and rolling, which create perceptible shifts in context upon second glance.
