Music in the Giant
Music in the Giant 2009
2009 saw the festival “Music in the Giant” devoted for the second time to a musical instrument and the wide variety of possibilities it represents. Following the clarinet focus of last year, which provided a worthy echo at this year’s opening concert with the Kremerata Baltica and a performance of Mozart’s clarinet concerto, we had orientated the subsequent 2009 programme towards the piano and the enormous scope of its expression.Performances by Grigorij Sokolov, Till Fellner and young Rumanian pianist Mihaela Ursuleasa demonstrated how the piano has changed as a solo instrument since classical music. Dialogue between two pianos was maintained by Ferhan and Ferzan Önder and likewise by Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa. The piano could be heard with voices and other instruments in Robert Schumann’s song cycle “Dichterliebe” (The Poet’s Love), sung by Roderick Williams, in William’s concert with Till Fellner and Adrian Brendel and in that of jazz musicians Enrico Rava and Stefano Bollani.
